1965-1968 Willie Mays Pro-Model Bat
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $2,251.50
Willie Mays block-letter (last name only) model "S2" bat dating from the 1965-1968 manufacturing period. Ideally, Mays' uniform number ("24") is written on the end of the knob in black marker. The bat, which is not cracked, displays excellent use, including several ball and stitch impressions on the barrel, as well as blue bat-rack marks, and cleat marks. The bat was later cleaned, with the finish having been removed, but that has not affected any of the aforementioned displays of use. This is an outstanding Mays bat dating from the heart of his magnificent career. Mays reached the zenith of his offensive powers in 1965, hitting a career-high 52 home runs. Long considered one of the greatest all-around players in baseball history, Mays led the National League in home runs on four separate occasions and garnered three MVP awards during his 22-year career. He also appeared in twenty consecutive All-Star Games (beginning in 1954) and is one of only four players in history to have recorded 3,000 or more hits and 500 or more home runs. Mays was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1979, his first year of eligibility. Length: 35 inches. Weight: 35.5 ounces. LOA from John Taube and Vince Malta of PSA/DNA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+.
