1923-1925 Tris Speaker Professional Model Pro-Stock Bat
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,540.50
Tris Speaker H&B signature bat (predating model numbers), dates specifically to the 1923-1925 manufacturing period. In each of these three seasons, Speaker was a hitting powerhouse, with batting averages of .380 in 1923, .344 in 1924, and a whopping .389 in 1925. This bat has been identified by PSA/DNA as a team ordered/pro stock index bat. As noted in its accompanying letter, "team ordered/pro stock index bats were ordered by Major League baseball teams for team use and at times, for the named player. In the rare instances where the team orders a bat specifically for the named player, the model number, length and weight will match bats appearing on the players Professional Bat Ordering Record during the referenced labeling period. These bats were ordered in bulk, generally by the dozens, to be used in spring training, batting practice and by Minor League affiliates. Teams would assemble an index of player names and the models of their bats. The index was referred to when ordering large numbers of bats. During the era, Cobb, Ruth, Speaker, and Hornsby were among the most popular team ordered models." It should be noted that the fact that this bat was ordered by the team (as opposed to being listed in the factory records as ordered by Speaker himself) in no way precludes the possibility that Speaker used it. The bat, which displays exceptionally deep and well-defined stampings throughout, shows evidence of excellent use, including a repaired "H" crack in the handle and several ball marks. There is a thirteen-inch area on the left barrel that has been lightly planed to accept factory sidewriting. Today, the sidewriting is no longer visible. PSA/DNA concludes that "After a thorough examination of this Tris Speaker pro stock model bat, and its player use characteristics, it is our opinion the bat is authentic and was manufactured during the referenced labeling period. The bat's use by Speaker cannot by confirmed." A Tris Speaker game bat with 100% confirmed game-use by Speaker would sell for $10,000+. The last one REA offered was a perfect sidewritten 1925-1928 model that sold for $19,975 in 2011. This team-ordered index bat will sell for a considerable discount and potentially represents an outstanding more affordable alternative. Length: 35 inches (Speaker is recorded to have ordered 35 inch bats). Weight: 30.1 ounces. LOA from John Taube and Vince Malta of PSA/DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,540.50
