1997 John Smoltz Atlanta Braves Signed Game-Used Jersey

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $948.00

Atlanta Braves home jersey worn by pitcher John Smoltz in a game against the Colorado Rockies at Turner Field on September 12, 1997. This jersey was obtained directly from the Atlanta Braves and is accompanied by a COA, dated 9/13/97, signed by Danny Goodwin, Executive Director of the Atlanta Braves Foundation. The white knit jersey is lettered "Braves" across the front, below which is the team's tomahawk logo. Displayed on the reverse are the number "29" and the name "Smoltz." All letters and numerals are appliquéd in red on navy tackle twill with the exception of the name on the reverse, which is appliquéd in navy tackle twill. A special Jackie Robinson commemorative patch (celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of his 1947 debut), which was worn by every Major League team in 1997, adorns the right sleeve. Located on the left front tail are a "Wilson" label and the year, "97," which is stitched in navy on a white strip tag. Located directly below the Wilson label are two flag tags: one denoting the size, "48," and the other reading "2 inch X-Length." Smoltz has signed the jersey in black Sharpie (grading "9") on the numeral "2." The jersey is original, with no alterations, and displays moderate wear, including a small, light stain on the right breast.

John Smoltz did not appear in the game against Colorado on September 12, 1997, but instead had to sit and watch idly by as closer Mark Wohlers failed to hold a 1-0 lead in the ninth by surrendering three runs, thereby blowing both the save and a victory for the Braves (the Rockies won the game 3-1). Smoltz finished the year with a 15-12 record, 3.02 ERA, and 241 strikeouts. Smoltz is one of the few pitchers in baseball history to enjoy a stellar career as both a starter and reliever. A former Cy Young Award winner in 1996, Smoltz won 213 games and saved another 154 during his 21-year career. He is also the only pitcher in baseball history to win both a Cy Young Award and a Rolaids Relief Man award (2002). Given his impressive resume as both a starter and reliever, Smoltz is a strong candidate for future Hall of Fame induction. Modern-era jerseys (dating from 1987 and later) accompanied by iron-clad provenance, such as this garment, are the rare exception rather than the rule. It should also be noted that in the absence of such provenance, modern-era jerseys are extremely challenging to authenticate, especially in distinguishing between those that are game used and those that are "team issued." This jersey, coming directly from the team, provides collectors with supreme reassurance of not only its game-used status, but the specific nature of its use, and the exact game in which it was worn. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $948.00
