Third Base from Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS - "Bartman Game"

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $2,133.00

Official game-used base from Game 6 of the 2003 National League Championship Series between the Chicago Cubs and Florida Marlins held at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS was the infamous game in which fan Steve Bartman unintentionally interfered with Cubs left fielder Moises Alou in his attempt to make a catch of a foul ball down the left-field sidelines. At the time of the incident, the Cubs held a 3-0 lead in the top of the eighth inning with one out and a runner on second. More important, the Cubs were just five outs from reaching the World Series for the first time since 1945. As most fans are aware, after Alou failed to make the catch the Marlins erupted for eight runs in the inning and eventually won the game 8-3. The base features a MLB hologram label (MT00232418) on the underside and comes with a corresponding MLB LOA which identifies it as a game-used base from Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS. Blue-marker notations on the underside of the base identify it as "3RD Base" and also "3RD Set." Usually, in playoff and World Series games three sets of bases are used (in regular-season games, two sets are the norm). The fact that this base is marked "3RD Set" is significant because it indicates that this was the very base on the field when the "Bartman Incident" occurred (the third set would have been used in the final three innings). The base itself, which is an "Original Hollywood Base/Jack Corbett" model manufactured by Schutt Sports, features the official MLB logo on two of the side panels, while the other two side panels display a special 2003 NLCS logo. It has been signed in black Sharpie (grading "9") on the top by Marlins manager Jack McKeon (McKeon's signature is also verified as being authentic in the accompanying MLB LOA). The all-rubber base (15 x 15 x 2 inches) displays wear commensurate with its game use, including heavy soiling. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,133.00
