1968 Sparky Lyle Signed Boston Red Sox Home Jersey - MEARS A10
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $829.50
Rare Boston Red Sox home jersey worn by relief pitcher Sparky Lyle in 1968. Graded A10 by MEARS. The white flannel jersey is lettered "Red Sox" across the front and features the number "28" on the reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in red on navy felt. Located on the left front tail are a "Tim McAuliffe" label, a "68" year tag, and a "44" size tag. Lyle has beautifully signed the jersey in black marker (grading "10") on the left front tail. The jersey is original as issued, with no alterations, and displays moderate wear, including a few light stains throughout. 1968 marked Sparky Lyle's second full season in the Majors. Appearing in forty-nine games, Lyle finished the year with a record of 6-1 with 11 saves and a 2.74 ERA. In March of 1972 Lyle was traded to the New York Yankees for Danny Cater. Like most trades between the Yankees and Red Sox over the years, this one did not go well for Boston. In his first year with the Yankees Lyle led the league in saves with 35, while posting a 1.92 ERA. For the next five seasons Lyle was among the top relievers in baseball, a period which culminated in his winning the Cy Young Award following the 1977 season. Lyle also helped lead the Yankees to three consecutive pennants and two World Championships during that period. This is the first Sparky Lyle jersey we have ever offered and we cannot recall having seen an earlier example. LOA from Troy Kinunen/MEARS and LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $829.50
