Trio of Circa 1950s Philadelphia A's Pro-Model Caps

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $414.75

Collection of three circa early 1950s Philadelphia A's Pro-Model caps. These three caps were purportedly worn, respectively, by Sam Chapman, Billy Hitchcock, and Harry Byrd, with each hat having a corresponding identifier, be it a name or number, written on the underside of the brim. Our consignor obtained these caps many years ago with the 100% certain understanding that the hats belonged to these three particular players, but as is usually the case with vintage caps, no additional documentation in the form of letters from the players accompanies. 1) Sam Chapman circa 1949 Philadelphia A's cap. The royal-blue wool cap features the letter "A" embroidered in white on the front. Chapman's uniform number ("4") is written on the underside of the brim in black marker. Both a "Spalding" and "Mitchell & Ness" label appear on the white leather headband. Chapman wore number "4" with the A's from 1946 through 1951, with the hat style corresponding to that entire time frame. Moderate wear is displayed throughout. 2) Billy Hitchcock 1952 Philadelphia A's cap. The navy-blue wool cap features the letter "A" embroidered in white on the front. Hitchcock's first name ("Bill") is scripted in black marker on the underside of the brim. The manufacturer's label has been removed, but the size ("7") is stamped in black on the leather headband. Hitchcock played with the A's from 1950 through 1952; however, both the style of "A" displayed on the front and the navy-blue color scheme were only used by the A's in 1952 and 1953, thereby pinpointing the year to 1952. The cap displays heavy use, including a few small tears throughout. 3) Harry Byrd circa 1952/1953 Philadelphia A's cap. The navy-blue wool cap features the letter "A" embroidered in white on the front. Byrd's uniform number ("39") is written in black marker on the underside of the brim. A "Mitchell & Ness" label appears on the leather headband, as does the size "7 1/8," which is stamped in black. Byrd played with the A's in 1950, 1952 and 1953; however, both the style of "A" displayed on the front and the navy-blue color scheme were only used by the A's in 1952 and 1953, thereby narrowing its period of use to one of those two seasons. Moderate-to-heavy wear is displayed throughout, including a few small tears along the rear of the cap. Total: 3 caps. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $414.75
