1961 Al Dark San Francisco Giants Game-Used Jersey
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,777.50
San Francisco home jersey worn by Al Dark in 1961, his inaugural managerial season with the club. The white flannel jersey is lettered "Giants" across the front and features the number "1" on the reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in black felt on orange tackle twill. The name "Dark" is chain-stitched in black upon a white strip tag on the left front tail. Located below the name tag are a "Tim McAuliffe" label, a "61" year tag, and a "46" size tag. The jersey, which is original and unaltered, displays moderate-to-heavy wear, including numerous light stains on the front. Dark, who enjoyed a long and successful fourteen-year Major League career, including six seasons as shortstop for the New York Giants, made his managerial debut with San Francisco in 1961. The Giants were coming off a fifth-place finish in 1960, but Dark was able to guide the club to third place in his first year. The following season he led the club to its first pennant in eight years, but lost the World Series to the Yankees in seven games. Dark managed the Giants through the 1964 season and later led the Oakland A's to a World Championship in 1974. Early 1960s San Francisco Giants home flannels are scarce, and this one, belonging to prominent team member, is an especially desirable example. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,777.50
