1949 Jim Wilson Philadelphia A's Home Jersey

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $829.50

Philadelphia Athletics home jersey worn by journeyman pitcher Jim Wilson in 1949. The white flannel jersey is lettered "A" on the left breast and features the number "28" on the reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in royal blue on white felt. Located on the interior right button flap are a "MacGregor Goldsmith 44" label, a "Mitchell & Ness" label, the uniform number "28" (chain-stitched in black upon a white strip tag), and a flag tag reading "Set 1 1949." (The jersey was manufactured by MacGregor Goldsmith and the lettering was applied by local merchant Mitchell & Ness.) The jersey is original, with no alterations, and displays moderate wear throughout, including scattered staining on both the front and reverse. Accompanying the jersey is a pair of Philadelphia A's home pants which do not appear to go with the jersey (the color scheme suggests they were used in either 1952 or 1953). The white flannel pants, with navy blue trim, do not display any manufacturer's labels (and there does not appear to be any evidence of label removal). The numbers "34-17" (most likely denoting the size and uniform number, respectively) are chain-stitched in black upon a white strip tag in the rear waistband. The letters "GAL" are written in black marker on the waistband as well, indicating that these pants were subsequently used in the minor leagues. The pants display heavy wear throughout, including a small tear on the front of the left leg, a large team repair on the rear right leg, and numerous stains. Jim Wilson only played with the A's in 1949, appearing in just one game. The best season of his twelve-year career (1945-1958) came in 1957, when he won fifteen games with the Chicago White Sox. 1940s Major League flannel jerseys are scarce, and this is a fine representative example from one of the American League's oldest franchises. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $829.50
