Lot # 140 (of 1807)   < Previous Lot | Next Lot >

1909-1911 E90-1 American Caramel Honus Wagner - Throwing

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $4,147.50

Graded EX 60 by SGC. One of only four examples graded at this level by SGC, with just one card graded higher (EX+ 70). Bright and clean, both front and back, with vibrant colors, four square corners, no creases or caramel stains, and centered to the right (approximately 75/25 L/R). The natural slight diamond cut and the centering to the right are solely responsible for this gem not grading even higher. This classic 1910-era Honus Wagner card is in extraordinary condition, all the more so for a caramel card, which because they were issued with candy, one card per package, tend to survive in lesser condition than their more common tobacco-card counterparts. This is a tremendous high-grade example of the rarer throwing pose of the legendary Honus Wagner from the premier “E” card issue. (Interesting provenance note: Our consignor originally had a total of six E90-1 Wagners and sold four examples at REA in 2011 and 2012. The last two cards appear as separate lots in this auction.) The SMR value for a PSA EX 5 is $3,850. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $4,147.50
