1909 Pittsburgh Pirates NL Champions Pocket Mirror with Honus Wagner
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,303.50
This celluloid pocket mirror, issued as a promotional piece for a local eatery, features oval portraits of nineteen members of the 1909 National League Champion Pittsburgh Pirates set against a decorative brown background. Among the players featured here are Hall of Famers Honus Wagner, Fred Clarke, and Vic Willis, as well as Tommy Leach, Howie Camnitz, Owen Wilson, Dots Miller, and Deacon Phillippe. Lettered in white along the top of the pin is the name of the establishment, "Golden's Cafe," while the location is listed along the base, "Pottsville, PA." Manufactured by Cruver MFG Co. of Chicago. It should be noted that this is one of two variations of this pocket mirror we have seen: one with advertising for Golden's Cafe and the other without. Based upon our experience, the advertising type is far scarcer. This mirror does have some condition issues in the form of light discoloration/foxing, primarily along the perimeter and affecting much of the lettering concerning the establishment, but still displays very nicely. A few light surface scratches are also evident. The mirror side displays heavy oxidation along the rim and loss to the silver finish (a common flaw with pocket mirrors). In Good condition overall. Diameter: 2.25 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,303.50
