1909 Hermes Ice Cream Pittsburgh Pirates "Pennant Winners" Stickpin
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $414.75
Extremely rare baseball stickpin, issued as a promotional piece by Hermes Ice Cream, commemorating the Pittsburgh PIrates' 1909 National League Championship. This pin was most likely one of many proudly displayed upon the lapels of fans attending the 1909 World Series against the Detroit Tigers at Forbes Field. The colorful black-and-gold celluloid pennant is lettered "Pittsburgh Pennant Winners 1909." The reverse reads "Hermes/All Cream Ice Cream/The Queen of Confections." Manufactured by Whitehead & Hoag. Hermes Ice Cream also issued a set of pins featuring portraits of the World Championship Pittsburgh Pirates using the same color scheme. Both the player pins and this die-cut celluloid pennant pin are exceedingly scarce today. The pennant portion of the pin, which is constructed entirely of celluloid and measures 2 inches across, is in Excellent to Mint condition. The stem of the pin itself, which is topped by a small "baseball," is 2.5 inches tall. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600.
