Circa 1920s Kelly's Slide Shoe Polish and Display Box
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $948.00
Attractive circa 1920s retail counter-display box complete with twelve canisters of Kelly's Slide Shoe Polish. The name of the product, of course, capitalizes on the fame of nineteenth-century baseball star Mike "King" Kelly. Kelly was known for his daring base running and his exploits often occasioned a cry of "Slide, Kelly, Slide" by the jubilant home crowd. The cheer became so familiar at games that a popular song by that name was later written, which forever immortalized the future Hall of Famer. The fact that this product dates to nearly twenty-five years after Kelly's death is a true testament to his enduring popularity. While "King" Kelly may have been the inspiration for the product's name, the company was careful not to infringe on his likeness. The colorful illustration on the back panel display features not Kelly, but a generic image of ballplayer sliding into home. The same exact illustration also appears on the reverse of the panel and on the lid of each canister of shoe polish. The display box is complete with twelve full canisters of Kelly's Slide Shoe Polish, and appears nearly exactly as it did in stores during the Roaring Twenties. The cardboard box (9 x 6 x 8 inches, with the back panel raised) displays a few minor tears and creases that are commensurate with its age and former use. None of the flaws, however, detracts in the least from its overall Excellent appearance. The twelve canisters also display moderate wear and are in Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Produced by Geo. J. Kelly Inc., of Lynn, Massachusetts. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $948.00
