Joe DiMaggio Sport Jacket (Worn on Cover of October 1965 GQ Magazine) and GQ Award
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,962.50
Always the epitome of elegance and class, it is no surprise that in 1965 Gentleman's Quarterly named Joe DiMaggio one of San Francisco's best-dressed men and featured him on the cover of its October issue. Offered here is the tweed sport jacket worn by DiMaggio for that 1965 GQ cover shoot, as well as his plaque from GQ acknowledging his superior taste in fashion. Ideally, both items originate directly from Joe DiMaggio's personal collection and were initially offered at the highly publicized DiMaggio auction in 2006, where they sold for $2,200. As such, they are accompanied by a letter of provenance signed by both of DiMaggio's granddaughters. The jacket is heavily worn, displaying both a few minor stains on the exterior and light tears to the interior lining, most noticeably at the top of the collar. This jacket was obviously a favorite of his and we have been told that DiMaggio often wore it to various events in later years. Accompanied by an original copy of the October 1965 issue of Gentleman's Quarterly picturing DiMaggio wearing this very jacket. (Vg-Ex). The wooden plaque (9.5 x 12 inches), designed in the shape of a shield, is engraved "Gentleman's Quarterly/Honors/Joe DiMaggio/As A Fashion Personality/In The City Of/San Francisco/In Recognition of His/Individuality In Dress/And His Valued Influence/On The Apparel Taste/Of His Community/Presented/October 1965." Moderate wear. Ex. Included with jacket and plaque are a number of small items that were found in the jacket pockets by the family after DiMaggio's passing: a napkin from DiMaggio's San Francisco restaurant (with the name, address, and phone number of a California deputy sheriff written on the reverse), two matchbooks, a card from a Singapore company, and the handwritten name and phone number of a woman named "Heather" scripted on a portion of Desert Inn stationery (Las Vegas). Total: 3 items (jacket, plaque, GQ magazine), plus a few ancillary items. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,962.50
