1958 Washington Senators Broadside Featuring Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, and Other Stars
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $948.00
This colorful broadside, issued by the Washington Senators, features both the teams’ home and away schedule for 1958, as well as portrait insets of eight American League stars: Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Nellie Fox, Al Kaline, Larry Doby, Herb Score, Roy Sievers, and Bill Tuttle. The bold graphics encourage fans to “See Baseball’s Greatest Stars at Griffith Stadium.” The players chosen for the advertisement represent the top players from each of the respective eight American League teams at the time, including hometown slugger Roy Sievers. What is most interesting about this piece is that Larry Doby is pictured wearing a Baltimore Orioles cap. The Chicago White Sox traded Doby to the Baltimore Orioles in December 1957; however, Doby never played a game for the Orioles. Just two week prior to the start of the 1958 season the Orioles traded Doby to Cleveland in a five player deal. Obviously, this broadside had already been printed and distributed prior to the trade, thereby providing one of the few known images of Doby as a member of the Orioles. This is the first example of this attractive broadside that we have ever seen and one that is probably missing from nearly every Mickey Mantle or Ted Williams collection. The broadside (13.75 x 21.75 inches), which is printed on cardboard stock, features a prepunched hole along the top border for ease in hanging, as well as minor surface and edge wear commensurate with its age and former use. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $948.00
