1954-1956 Rawlings Mickey Mantle Retail Glove in Original Box
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,666.25
Offered here is what is universally regarded as the most attractive Mickey Mantle glove box ever issued. It is also rare. This is just the second example of this highly prized retail box we have ever offered. The first appeared as Lot 1059 in our May 2012 auction, where it realized a final sale price of $3,555. The lid pictures Mantle in uniform kneeling next to a large illustration of the glove, while the front and back sides of the box depict a large portrait of "The Mick". One of the many factors that sets this box apart from all others in terms of display value is the design of the two identical side panels, which picture five photos of Mantle in uniform striking various poses: two batting (one from the left side, the other from the right), leaping, in a fielder's stance, and standing. Mantle was the king of New York at the time of this glove's issue and the striking design of the box was one that would certainly catch the eye of any youngster looking for a new glove to buy. That's exactly what happened to our consignor, who purchased this piece as young boy in the 1950s. Ideally, it is still accompanied by the original glove it once housed: a 1954-1956 Mickey Mantle Rawlings model "MM4." The glove, which displays heavy wear, served our consignor well during his playing days on the sandlot, but the box (8.25 x 8.25 x 6.5 inches) has been well cared for over the years. Light wear, commensurate with its age and former use, is evident throughout, including a tiny stain on a side panel and a few extremely minor surface abrasions (mainly along the edges of the lid). The original price ("$12.95") is written in vintage ink on both the top of the lid and a side panel (the price on the side panel was later crossed out in pencil. Other than those unobtrusive, minor flaws the box remains in remarkable condition. Most notably, it is free of any tears along the flap seams on the lid and the side seams on the bottom. In Excellent condition overall and, it should be noted, in a finer state of preservation than the previously cited example sold by REA in 2012. The fact that this example is new to the hobby and is complete with the original glove (and consigned by the original owner who bought this as a youngster in the 1950s!) only adds to its appeal. This is an outstanding display piece and one that would be right at home in any advanced Mickey Mantle or store-model glove collection. Reserve $500. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $2,666.25
