1951 Mickey Mantle News Photo (The Baseball Magazine Provenance!)
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,185.00
Original news photo of New York Yankees rookie outfielder Mickey Mantle in 1951. Taken by noted New York sports photographer William C. Greene, the posed image captures Mantle leaping in the air as he makes a throw. The reverse features Greene's proprietary stamp, editorial stamps and notations, and Mantle's name written twice, once alongside the year, "1951." This photo originates from The Baseball Magazine archives, as indicated by the hologram label affixed to the reverse, and most likely appeared in the pages of the magazine at the time. (The Baseball Magazine archives were sold by Christie's in 1996 and this photo originates from that historic auction.) This is both an extremely early and attractive photo of Mantle taken during his first year with the New York Yankees. The photo (7 x 9 inches) displays a light editorial cropping line located on all four sides, just inside the white margins, as well as light surface wrinkles (only visible when viewed at certain angles), and a light circular emulsion in the upper left corner. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $1,185.00
