Circa 1940s Babe Ruth Souvenir Photo Collection (17) with Mailing Envelope
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $592.50
Originating directly from Babe Ruth's personal supply, these seventeen 3 x 5-inch photos were used by the "Sultan of Swat" to fulfill the countless autograph requests he received by mail following his retirement. Each photo is identical in composition and captures Ruth as a member of the Yankees while he strikes one of his classic batting poses. Included with the photos is an example of the envelope (7.5 cx 4 inches) Ruth used to mail them, which bears his preprinted name and city (Babe Ruth/New York") as the return address. (Apparently no street address was needed; with the amount of mail he received everyone at the post office knew where Babe Ruth lived.) Each photo is essentially in Near Mint condition with the exception of three that display only light toning and/or surface wear (Ex-Mt). The front of the envelope displays a heavy amount of glue residue where, apparently, a photo had once been adhered, and is otherwise in Very Good to Excellent condition, with a vertical fold and light corner wear. These photos were obtained long ago directly from the estate of Peter DeRose, the famous songwriter who was one of Ruth's closest friends. This is an outstanding collection of Ruth souvenir photos that, sadly, Ruth never had the opportunity to sign before his death in 1948. Total: 18 items (17 photos and 1 envelope). Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $592.50
