1947 and 1956 Jackie Robinson Original News Photos - "Arrival" and "Departure" - PSA/DNA Type 1
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,659.00
They say every picture tells a story. If that is true, then together these two original news photos tell a tale of monumental historic importance: the integration of organized baseball. 1) The first, taken in 1947, pictures Jackie Robinson in his Montreal Royals uniform as he walks into the Brooklyn Dodgers clubhouse for the very first time following the purchase of his contract by the Dodgers on April 10th. The Royals, which were the Dodgers AAA farm club, traveled to Ebbets Field on that date to play an exhibition with Brooklyn. Robinson started at first base for Montreal that game and in the middle of the game, during the sixth inning, Dodgers president and general manager Branch Rickey announced to the press that the Dodgers had just purchased Robinson's contract and that he would report to the club immediately. This photo captures that historic moment when Robinson first became a member of the Dodgers, thereby marking the first time in sixty-three years that an African-American player appeared on a Major League roster. An "Acme Newspictures" stamp appears on the reverse, as does the date stamp "APR 15 1947" (the date of Robinson's first regular-season game with the Dodgers). The original paper news caption is no longer present. The photo (8 x 10 inches) displays a number of minor flaws common to nearly all working press photos, including a moderate vertical crease extending from the top border through Robinson's head, light creasing throughout, and corner and edge wear. In Very Good condition overall. Encapsulated and certified as a "Type 1 Original News Service Photograph" by PSA/DNA. 2) Associated Press news photo picturing Jackie Robinson leaving the Dodgers clubhouse for the last time following his retirement from baseball. Taken on January 7, 1957, Robinson is seen waving goodbye with his bat and equipment bag in tow. When viewed side by side with the other photo, taken ten years earlier, one can see the toll the fight for integration took on Robinson, as he looks much older than a thirty-eight-year-old man. The original paper caption was originally removed from the reverse, but has been reapplied by means of clear tape. The photo (7 x 9 inches) displays light creasing throughout. In Very Good condition overall. Encapsulated and certified as a "Type 1 Original News Service Photograph" by PSA/DNA. Total: 2 photos. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,659.00
