Circa 1910 P2 Sweet Caporal Pins Near-Complete Set (186 of 205) Including 118 PSA-Graded
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $5,925.00
Extraordinary near-complete set of 1910 P2 Sweet Caporal pins comprised of 186 of the 205 pins in the set. An incredible 118 pins have been graded and encapsulated by PSA. The P2 Sweet Caporal pin set is one of the most interesting, substantial, and most overlooked of all baseball tobacco inserts. This classic 1910-era issue features almost all of the great stars and Hall of Famers of the era, many appearing in the set twice, including Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Tris Speaker, and Cy Young. The players in this set are also found in T205 and T206. Assembling a complete set of P2s is more challenging than many collectors realize due to the many scarce pins and numerous variations. There are 153 pins with “small letters” and 52 “large letters” in a complete set. After the most common fifty or sixty pins (which are most frequently seen by far) they start to get scarce. Many of the Hall of Famers in the set are represented by both a "large letter" (photo style) variety and a "small letter" (artwork style) variety. This set is loaded with Hall of Famers and rarities. As noted above, 118 of these pins have been graded and encapsulated by PSA, which is a substantial investment. Condition of the sixty-eight ungraded pins is largely Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt due to varying stages of wear visible on the reverses. The original advertising back papers are complete and intact on all but four pins. The pin is missing from the reverse of the Cy Young (small) example. Each of the ungraded pins remains extremely attractive and consistent with the graded examples. PSA grading composite: MINT 9 (2 pins): Gibson (small) and Moran. NM-MT 8 (10 pins): Bates, Becker, Dahlen, Dooin (large), Fromme, Hemphill, Leever, Needham, Schaefer, and Schmidt (small). NM 7 (18 pins): Callahan, Camnitz (large), Cicotte, Crandall, Devlin, Elberfeld (large), Huggins (large), Lajoie, Lord (small), McLean (large), McLean (small), Oakes (large), Pelty, Reulbach, Smith, Thomas (large), Tinker (large), and Young (large). EX-MT 6 (48 pins): Ames, Austin (large), Baker, Bell (small), Bescher, Bresnahan (small), Chance (small), Chase (large), Cobb (large), Cree, Delahanty, Dooin (small), Dougherty, Duffy (small), Engle (small), Evans, Ferguson, Ford (large), Ford (small), Herzog (large), Hooper, Huggins (small), Jennings (small), Johnson (small), Karger, Knight (large), Konetchy, Krause, Kroh, Leifield, Maddox, Mathewson (large), Mattern (small), McGraw (large), McGraw (small), McIntyre (small), Merkle, Miller, Mullen (small), Oakes (small), Paskert (large), Scanlon, Schmidt (large), Stanage, Stovall (small), Wallace (small), Wheat (large), and A. Wilson. EX 5 (36 pins): Barger, Barry, Bell (large), Bender (large), Bergen, Brown (large), Brown (small), Chase (small), Collins (large), Drucke, Duffy (large), Engle (large), Evers, Gaspar, Griffith (large), Harmon, Hartsel, Johnson (large), Jones, Leach (large), Livingston, Mathewson (small), McIntyre (large), Mitchell, Mullin (large), Oldring, Quinn, Rucker (large), Speaker (large), Speaker (small), Tinker (small), Titus (large), Titus (small), Wallace (large), Wheat (small), and O. Wilson. VG-EX 4 (2 pins): Doolan (large) and Stone. VG 3 (2 pins): Collins (small) and Jennings (large). The nineteen pins missing for completion are Archer (large), Ball, Birmingham, Bresnahan (large), Chance (large), Clarke (large), Flynn, Gibson (large), Grant, Hoffman, Laporte (large), Mullen (large), O'Leary, Steinfeldt, Street (large), Suggs, Wallace (without cap), Walsh, and Wilson (large). It is hard not to appreciate the extraordinary value represented by P2s compared to tobacco-card issues of the era, though the recent introduction of pin grading has generated a bit more well-deserved collector interest. This is a very attractive set in mid- to high-grade that is rarely available in such consistent condition. SMR value for the 118 PSA-graded pins (not including the 68 ungraded pins) is $9,166. Total: 186 pins (of the 205 in the set). Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $5,925.00
