Rare 1942 All-Star Game Program with Equally Rare Insert - From the Keith Sutton Collection - Founding Member of SABR

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $948.00

Program from the 1942 All-Star Game held at the Polo Grounds on July 6th, accompanied by its seldom-seen insert titled "This is the Tenth All Star Game" (the insert was included to inform fans that all proceeds from the game were to be donated to the Bat and Ball Fund, which provided baseball equipment to men in the armed forces). The 1942 All-Star program has long been universally recognized as one of the rarest of all All-Star Game programs (it is considered by many to be the rarest) and one of the keys to assembling a complete run. This particular program also has the special provenance of originating from the personal collection of Keith Sutton, who was one of the founding members of SABR (Society for American Baseball Research). (A number of Sutton's other personal souvenirs, including cards, programs, and autographs, are offered as separate lots elsewhere in this auction.) Sutton, whose biography can be viewed on the SABR website (http://sabr.org/content/sabr-salute-keith-sutton), was a Giants fan, so it's no surprise that he attended the game to cheer on the National League. It's also no surprise that he saved his program. As was his custom, Sutton has written the particulars of the game in black ink along the top border of the cover: "1942 All-Star Game/American League 3/National League 1." In addition to its provenance, this example is a true condition rarity. Outside of the notations on the cover, both the program (which is not scored) and insert are in remarkable Near Mint condition. This is the finest example of this great rarity we have ever offered, in addition to being one of the few we have seen that is complete with the original insert. 6.5 x 10 inches. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
