1942 War Bond Game Programs, Ticket Stub, and Photos and 1943 War Bond Game Full Ticket - Ruth's Last Home Run! (8 items)

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,303.50

In both 1942 and 1943 Babe Ruth took to the field for Uncle Sam by participating in two highly publicized events to help raise money for the war effort. Offered here are mementoes from each of those two events, including original snapshot photos of Ruth from 1942 and a ticket stub to the 1943 War Bond Game, which marked Ruth's final home run in a Major League stadium. 1) Two programs, ticket stub, and four original snapshot photos from the doubleheader between the Yankees and Washington Senators held at Yankee Stadium on August 23, 1943. As noted on the ticket stub, most of the proceeds from the game went to the Army and Navy Relief Funds. Over 69,000 fans did their patriotic duty that day by attending; however, most came not for the two games between the Yankees and Senators, but for the entertainment between the games. It was during that short break that Babe Ruth once again stepped up to the plate to face Walter Johnson in a one-on-one contest. Ruth did not disappoint the fans that afternoon, as he launched the fifth pitch into the right field bleachers. His final swing resulted in another mammoth drive that landed foul in the upper deck, after which he made a triumphant circle of the bases and tipped his cap to the fans as he left the field. Offered is a ticket stub and scored programs from both games of the doubleheader that day, plus four unique snapshot photos of Ruth batting against Johnson that were taken by a fan in the upper deck. Two of the photos picture Ruth swinging at the plate, one pictures Johnson on the mound, and the final one captures Ruth as he rounds third base during his home-run trot. The programs (6.5 x 10 inches) are in Excellent to Mint condition. The ticket stub (3.25 x 2.5 inches) displays a tiny corner chip in the upper left and is in Very Good to Excellent condition. The photos (different sizes, approximately 3.5 x 3.5) are in Excellent to Mint condition. 2) Full ticket to the special War Bond Game held at the Polo Grounds on August 26, 1943. This game matched a team of all stars made up from the rosters of the Giants, Yankees, and Dodgers, against a U.S. Service team. Once again, adding to the festivities was a match up of Ruth vs. Johnson, whereupon Ruth once again hit a home run. What made that home run so significant is that it marked Ruth's final home run at a Major League stadium. The offered full ticket (2.25 x 6 inches), which has a price of $1,000, remains in Near Mint condition. Total: 8 items (2 programs, 2 ticket stubs, and 4 photos). Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
