1939 Original "Lou Gehrig Day" News Photo - PSA/DNA Type 1
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $829.50
Original news photo capturing Yankees manager Joe McCarthy presenting Lou Gehrig with a special trophy during the emotional "Lou Gehrig Day" ceremony held at Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939. It was at this ceremony that Gehrig, stricken with the terminal disease ALS, delivered his legendary "Luckiest Man Alive" speech to the 61,808 fans who came out that day to honor him. An Acme news stamp appears on the reverse, as does the original paper news caption, dated "7-4-39." As noted in the caption, the trophy Gehrig is accepting was a token of appreciation on behalf of the entire Yankee team. As such, it was probably the most meaningful and important presentation piece he received that day. The photo is accompanied by an LOA from PSA/DNA certifying it as an original "Type I News Service Photograph." Original photos from "Lou Gehrig Day" are scarce. This is only the second example we have offered (the other was a photo signed by both Ruth and Gehrig) and we cannot recall a more poignant image from that historic day. The photo (7 x 6 inches), which displays extraordinary clarity, remains in Excellent to Mint condition, and is in far finer condition than most working press photos from that era. Superb in all respects. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $829.50
