1941 Lou Gehrig Day Full Ticket

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $3,555.00

Rare full ticket for the "Lou Gehrig Memorial" ceremony held at Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1941. The ticket features a bust-length photo of Gehrig in the center and makes note of the special memorial ceremony scheduled for that day. This is one of the most highly prized of all baseball tickets, and one of the very few baseball tickets that is notable for its tremendous display value. Gehrig passed away on June 2, 1941, just one month prior to the Yankees' scheduled tribute to their former captain on July 4th. On that day, between games of a doubleheader against the Philadelphia Athletics, the Yankees planned to dedicate a monument to Gehrig in center field alongside that of Miller Huggins (Huggins also died prematurely, in 1929). They chose the date of July 4th because it would have marked the two-year anniversary of Lou Gehrig Day at Yankee Stadium, the ceremony at which Gehrig delivered his legendary "Luckiest Man Alive" speech. While all of the preparations were in place that day, the weather did not cooperate and both games, along with the ceremony, were rained out and rescheduled for Sunday, July 6th. It is probably for that reason that a number of full tickets can be found today, as some people were unable to attend the makeup date. Their loss is today some collector's gain, as this is one of only a small number of full tickets which have survived. While that historic day certainly belonged to the memory of the "Iron Horse" it is also noteworthy that DiMaggio hit safely in both games of the doubleheader, raising his streak total to forty-eight straight games. The ticket (6 x 2.5 inches) has been encapsulated and graded VG 3 by PSA for minor edge and border wear. It should be noted that PSA evaluates tickets as stringently as it does cards and this example, as can easily be seen, displays at a much higher level than reflected by its technically accurate grade. Excellent in appearance overall. Reserve $500. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $3,555.00
