Historic May 25, 1935, Photograph of Babe Ruth Hitting His Final Home Run (#714)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,303.50

Remarkably historic original news photo of Babe Ruth hitting the 714th and final home run of his legendary career on May 25, 1935, at Forbes Field as a member of the Boston Braves. This very photo was published in the June 3, 1935, issue of the Boston Post on the occasion of Ruth's retirement from the game, with the caption below it reading "This picture of the Babe was made at Pittsburg on the last Western trip and was clicked as Babe hit his third and longest homer of the day - he got three. That was his best day since joining the Braves." A copy of the newspaper page on which it was featured accompanies the photo. Affixed to the reverse of the photo is an editorial slip which credits the photo to the Associated Press. Also appearing on the reverse are the date stamp "Jun 3 - 1935" and additional editorial pencil notations. Ruth's 714th home run on May 25th at Forbes Field was his third of the game and one of the longest of his career. It also holds the distinction of being the only home run to ever clear the roof of the right-field grandstands at Forbes Field. The ball reportedly soared over 600 feet before landing in a construction lot across the street from the stadium. However, because no one anticipated Ruth retiring one week later, the historical significance of his 714th home run, and this photo, were not realized at the time. Perhaps that is the reason why we cannot recall having ever seen another original example of this significant Ruth photo. This photo originates from one of the most advanced Babe Ruth photo collections in the hobby and was one of its primary highlights for many years. In terms of historical significance, very few Ruth photos can compete with it, as it truly documents the end to the greatest career in the history of the sport. The photo (5 x 6.25 inches) has been trimmed to its current dimensions. A number of light creases are evident throughout and there is a very light editorial outline to Ruth's bat (barely noticeable). In Very Good condition overall. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,303.50
