1939 Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig Original News Photo - "Lou Gehrig Day" - PSA/DNA Type 1
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,133.00
Original news photo of one of baseball's most iconic images: Babe Ruth hugging Lou Gehrig during the Lou Gehrig Day ceremonies at Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939. Encapsulated and certified as a "Type 1 Original News Service Photograph" by PSA/DNA. While the scene presented here needs no verbal embellishment, we feel the special significance of this particular photo warrants clarification. First is the fact that both players are pictured nearly full body, with the photo also including the players and Yankee Stadium scoreboard in the background. Nearly all other known original photos capturing this moment are cropped and picture the pair up close, making this example of very special note and perhaps a unique image. Second is its condition. Most vintage news photos feature flaws common to their age and former use, including minor tears, creasing, and editorial outlining. The offered example is a true condition rarity. Aside from a small horizontal crease emanating from the left border and a few extremely minor surface wrinkles (only visible when viewed at certain angles), the photo is in superb Excellent to Mint condition, and probably the finest example known of this historic photo. An "International News Photos Inc." stamp appears on the reverse, as do vintage newspaper clippings, and a magazine photo of this very image. Extraordinary in all respects. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,133.00
