Historic Pair of July 4, 1939 Lou Gehrig Day Programs - Both Games of the Doubleheader!

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $592.50

On July 4, 1939, Lou Gehrig, with the knowledge that he was suffering from an incurable disease, delivered one of the most moving and memorable speeches in sports history when he stood in front of over 61,000 fans at Yankee Stadium and declared "I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth." That speech took place at a special ceremony between games of a doubleheader between the Yankees and Senators, and was attended by many of Gehrig's former teammates, including Babe Ruth, who offered Gehrig an emotional embrace afterwards. Offered here are two exceedingly rare programs from that day, with each program scored in pencil, respectively, for the first and second games of the doubleheader. These are the first programs from that historic day that we have ever offered and over the years we have seen only one other set. The program from the first game is neatly scored in pencil and records Washington's 3-2 victory. The program from the second game, which has the notation "2nd Game - July" printed in pencil on the scoring page, is only fully scored through the second inning of what would be an 11-1 Yankees rout. It is obvious from the scoring notations that these two programs were not scored by the same fan and may not have originated together. As noted earlier, we have only seen one other pair of programs from the July 4, 1939, "Lou Gehrig Day" doubleheader. Luckily, the longtime collector who owns that other set of programs was kind enough to bring them to our office so that we could compare the scoring. For each program the scoring was identical to that of our offered programs with regard to walks, fly outs, ground outs, etc. That fact is important, because the programs themselves are not dated (other than the year "1939") and while the box scores for the games are readily available, the actual play-by-play action for the games is not. The fact that both sets of programs matched exactly fully supports their authenticity. The game 1 program is lightly toned and displays almost a complete separation along the spine, a moderate vertical fold, and general handling wear. In Very Good condition overall. The game 2 program displays light toning, minor creasing, a pencil drawing of Yankee Stadium on the reverse, and both paper residue and paper loss on the reverse from having once been mounted in an album. In Very Good condition overall. Each eight-page program measures 6.5 x 10 inches. Total: 2 programs. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $592.50
