1928 Original Lou Gehrig & New York Yankees Infielders Photo - PSA/DNA Type 1
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $533.25
Original news photo capturing the seven infielders on the New York Yankees roster in 1928 (left to right): Leo Durocher, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Joe Dugan, Mike Gazella, Gene Robertson, and Mark Koenig. Encapsulated and certified as a "Type 1 Original News Service Photograph" by PSA/DNA. A "Wide World Photos" credit stamp appears on the reverse, as does the handwritten notation "Murderers' Row - infield." Also found on the reverse is a "Nov 30 1928" date stamp and a black ink stamp that reads "New York Yankees 1928/484-141." The original paper news caption is no longer present (remnants remain on the reverse). Like the year before, the 1928 Yankees once again swept their National League rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals, in the World Series, thereby solidifying their claim as one of baseball's all-time greatest clubs. The infielders pictured here were in no small way responsible for the team's success that season. Gehrig, of course, produced his usual incredible numbers, leading the team in batting average (.374) and RBI (142), while hitting 27 home runs. The other three starters were also highly productive at the plate, with both Lazzeri and Koenig batting over .300 and Dugan recording a .276 mark. Durocher later went on to fame as the shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals' legendary "Gas House Gang" in 1934. The photo (10 x 8 inches), which displays outstanding clarity, has just a few minor surface wrinkles and light rippling. In Excellent condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $533.25
