Babe Ruth's Personal Monogrammed Hand Mirror
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $2,370.00
Offered here is about as personal a Babe Ruth item as one can find: Babe Ruth's own sterling silver hand mirror! This mirror was originally offered in our April 2007 auction as part of a set of seven toiletry items owned by Ruth (Lot 1009; sold for $16,450), with the other six pieces in the collection comprised of his hairbrush, shoe brush, comb, shoehorn, glass toothbrush holder with a metal cap, and pair of small scissors. The mirror, like all but one of the other items in the collection, features Ruth's monogram ("GHR") engraved on the reverse and was crafted by Reed and Barton (so stamped on the handle). Ideally, the set of toiletry items came with impeccable provenance: all were originally obtained by legendary collector Barry Halper directly from Mrs. Ruth. Barry Halper was very close with Ruth’s widow, Claire, and often escorted her to Yankee Old Timers' Day games and other special events at the stadium prior to her passing in 1976. During that time Barry was given many of Ruth’s personal items directly from her as tokens of appreciation for his kindness, including the set of toiletry items that included this mirror. At the time, our consignor purchased the lot specifically for the mirror, which he intended to use as a motivational tool for young ballplayers (he later consigned the other items to REA in 2008, keeping just the mirror). As a coach of a youth baseball team, on which his sons played, he had the kids look at themselves in a mirror before and after each game, telling them that if they can look at themselves and say they have given their all in the game, that win or lose, they have succeeded as players. What better mirror to use, he thought, than the same one used by Babe Ruth. Now that the mirror has served its purpose (his kids are older now and he is no longer coaching), he has decided to part with it. The mirror (5 x 8 inches), like all of the items that originally accompanied it, displays wear commensurate with its age and appears to have been used for many years by the Babe. This is a truly unique Ruth item, with outstanding provenance, and one that can still be used as intended today. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,370.00
