Circa 1925 Adolfo Luque Goldsmith Advertising Sign

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $711.00

Rare Goldsmith Athletic Goods advertising sign promoting the company's Adolfo Luque endorsed baseball glove. The colorful sign pictures a full-size image of Luque as a member of the Cincinnati Reds and a large inset image of the glove bearing his name. The Goldsmith Athletics Goods name, and its motto, "First-because they-Last," appear in the lower left. Adolfo Luque, nicknamed "The Pride of Havana," was one of the first great Cuban stars in the Major Leagues. While he made two brief appearances with the Boston Braves in 1914 and 1915, Luque's career actually began with Cincinnati in 1918, when he finished the year with a 6-3 record. In 1919 he improved to 10-3 and even made two appearances in the infamous 1919 World Series. His breakout season came in 1923, when he led the National League in wins with 27. Luque remained with Cincinnati through 1929, which most likely dates this sign to sometime between 1923 and 1929. This is the first example of this retail advertising display we have ever seen and the fact that it features one of the most prominent Cuban players in Major League history makes it especially interesting and desirable. The sign (13 x 14 inches), printed on cardboard stock, displays a prepunched hole at the top so that it could be hung on a wall. General wear commensurate with its age and former use is evident throughout, including minor rippling, edge wear, a moderate seven-inch scratch, and minor surface blemishes. The reverse displays a few areas of surface paper loss from the piece having once been mounted. In Very Good condition overall. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $711.00
