1921 Babe Ruth News Photo - Spring Training in Hot Springs, Arkansas - Baseball Magazine Provenance!
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $474.00
Original news photo capturing Babe Ruth (in street clothes) on the field prior to spring training in 1921. The accompanying paper news caption (which has detached from the reverse), dated "3-9-21," is titled "Working Off Weight At Hot Springs" and explains the action. In full: "Otto Miller (in uniform) catcher of the Brooklyn Dodgers and 'Babe' Ruth, the Yankees Home Run King playing ball at Hot Springs, Ark. where both worked off much avoirdupois before going to their respective training camps." An "International" news stamp appears on the reverse as do a number of editorial pencil notations. This photo originates from the Baseball Magazine photo archive and bears a special hologram label on the reverse validating its special provenance. (The entire Baseball Magazine photo archive was sold at public auction at Christie's in 1996.) This is not only an early Ruth photo, capturing him in just his second season with the Yankees, but one of the few that we can recall picturing him playing ball on the field in street clothes. The photo (8.5 x 6.5 inches) displays flaws commensurate with a working press photo, including a tack hole in each corner (one of which has torn through the edge), a few light creases, and editorial pencil notations along the front borders. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $474.00
