1916 Honus Wagner News Photo Attributed to George Grantham Bain
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $948.00
News photo of Hall of Fame infielder Honus Wagner, attributed to renowned baseball photographer George Grantham Bain. Wagner is pictured as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates as he swings a bat on the sidelines. As was customary for Bain, the name of the player and his respective team were etched into the negative. As a result, both are visible along the top border: "Hans Wagner, Pitts." A "Culver Service" credit stamp appears on the reverse, as does the printed caption "Hans Wagner/shortstop of Pirates who/will play first next year/Sept. 18 1916." Although the photo is stamped "1916" on the reverse, the uniform style worn by Wagner here was only used by the Pirates for the two-year period 1913-1914, indicating that it was taken a few years earlier. The photo (4 x 6 inches), which offers exceptional clarity, displays a tiny diagonal crease in the upper left corner; otherwise it is in Excellent condition. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++.
