1919 Jim Thorpe Original News Photo - PSA/DNA Type 1
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $592.50
Original news photo capturing Jim Thorpe "in action" at the plate as a member of the Boston Braves in 1919. Thorpe is pictured in mid swing as he takes batting practice prior to a game. 1919 marked Thorpe's final season in the Major Leagues and his only year with Boston. Thorpe was never a regular during his six seasons in the Majors, most of which were spent with the New York Giants. While we have seen Thorpe in a number of team photos from the era, this is the first we can recall where he is pictured "in action," and at the plate no less. Located on the reverse are a "Reference Dept. - N. E. A." stamp, the date stamp "Aug 29 1919," and a pencil notation reading "Jim Thorpe/Boston Natl." (N. E. A. stands for Newspaper Enterprise Association, which was one of the nation's first news syndicates.) Research indicates that Boston was in Philadelphia that day for a doubleheader against the Phillies. This is one of a small selection of extraordinary Type I photos from the Acme Newspictures photo archive consigned to this auction. Valuing original photos (especially extreme rarities that are unique or nearly unique) is naturally subjective, but these never-before-offered photographs really are "the best of the best." All are offered with nominal reserves and the auction process (as always at REA) will determine the proper value level. The photo (7 x 10 inches) displays chips in both the upper and lower left corners and a few light surface wrinkles. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
