Outstanding 1913 Baseball "Managers" Fan (with Lajoie, Mack, Jennings, etc.)
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $711.00
This classic baseball fan, dating from 1913, pictures a scorecard design in the center surrounded by portrait images of all sixteen managers in the Major Leagues. What makes this piece so unusual is the manner in which the portrait images are displayed. Each of the portraits is superimposed over a caricature body that relates in some amusing way to the team's name. For example, Nap Lajoie of the "Naps" is dressed and posed as Napoleon, Fred Clarke of the Pirates is dressed up as a Pirate with a bandanna and a wooden leg, etc. The managers pictured here include Jennings, Griffith, Lajoie, McGraw, Mack, Tinker, Evers, Chance, Clarke, and Huggins. These fans were normally sold as advertising premiums to small business establishments, with custom advertising printed on the reverse. This particular example is blank-backed. Twenty-plus years ago, 1910-era baseball fans featuring players were a particularly popular area of collecting among advanced collectors, and prices for them were actually higher than today, but they have received very little attention in recent years. This is a particularly outstanding fan and may be the finest example of this classic that we have ever seen. Complete with its original wooden handle. Aside from only the most minute edge wear imaginable, and a small crack at the top of the wooden handle, the fan remains in spectacular Near Mint condition. Fan dimension: 9.25 x 8.75 inches. Handle length: 6 inches. Reserve $400. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $711.00
