Enormous Cuban and Negro League Collection Spanning Over 100 Years (1893-2006)

This extraordinary Cuban and Negro League collection, spanning the years 1893 through 2006, is comprised of a diverse group of 101 items, including rare broadsides, letters, contracts, ticket stubs, magazine, books, guide books, annual record books, and programs. It should be noted that this collection was amassed over a period of decades by an extremely dedicated Cuban-baseball historian and is one of several Cuban/Mexican/Negro League lots that he has consigned to this auction, all of which are notable for the scarcity of the material therein. The collection consists of the following: 1) 1937 Spanish-language broadside (8 x 13.5 inches on paper stock) heralding a game between the Ciudad Trujillo B.B.C. and the Estrellas de Oriente on June 20th. The broadside lists the lineups for each club, with the Ciudad lineup featuring Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Cool Papa Bell, Sam Bankhead, Harry Williams, and Leroy Matlock. Gd, with a few repaired tears and light stains. Framed. 2) Circa 1931 Negro League broadside announcing two games at Bidwell Park in Mellenville, New York, each involving the hometown Philmonts. 6 x 9.5 inches on paper stock. Gd-Vg. Framed. 3) 1897 broadside heralding two indoor baseball games, one of which includes the Chicago Unions, a Negro League team. 5.25 x 8.75 inches on paper stock. Gd. Framed. 4) French-language broadside, circa 1890s, for a game between The Cuban Giants and Le National played in Quebec. Le National was Montreal amateur team. 6 x 8.5 inches on paper stock. Vg-Ex. Framed. 5) 1898 Ticket stub for an indoor baseball game between the Rialtos and Chicago Unions, a Negro League team. 4 x 3 inches; Fr-Gd. 6) 1893 ticket stub for a game between the Cuban Giants and the Governor's Foot Guards. 3.5 x 2.25 inches. Fr-Gd. 7) 1915 Angel Aragon New York Yankees contract. Signed by both Aragon ("9") and team owner Jacob Ruppert ("8") in black fountain pen. Also signed by American League president Ban Johnson ("9"). Although the contract is not dated, it was approved by Johnson on May 6, 1915. 8.5 x 14 inches. Ex. 8) 1938-1939 Alejandro Oms Guayama B.B.C. Puerto Rican League contract, dated 11/4/38, signed by all parties. 8.5 x 11. Vg, with notebook holes at the top. 9) Official Liga de Base Ball Profesional Cubana player list for the Mariano Club, dated 8/26/52, listing Ray Dandridge on the roster. 8.5 x 11 inches. Vg-Ex. 10) Fourteen different Puerto Rican League programs dating from 1939 and 1940, each picturing a different player on the cover, including Perucho Cepeda. Some of the programs feature Leon Day in the lineup as a member of the Aguadilla Sharks. 6.25 x 9.5 inches. All have some holes along the left border from having once been bound in an album, otherwise Vg overall. 11) Fifteen different issues of Beisbol, a Mexican baseball league magazine, spanning the years 1945-1957. 8.5 x 12 inches. Gd-Vg overall. 12) Five different Cameonato Cuban League baseball programs, spanning the years 1949-1954. Gd overall. 13) Bound collection of fourteen Fotos Cuban sports magazines, circa mid 1940s. Gd overall. 14) Two original artworks picturing Hector Rodriguez and Ramon Bragana, respectively, used as cover illustrations for the Cuban weekly magazine Bohemia. Approximately 5 x 6 inches. Ex. 15) Two-page letter (8.5 x 11 inches), dated 9/8/39, on Nat Strong Baseball Enterprises letterhead, signed by W. A. Leuschner. Content regards scheduling of a baseball game. Accompanied by original mailing envelope. Ex. 16) 1940 Buster Clarkson Mayaguez B.B.C. Puerto Rican League signed contract (8.5 x 11 inches). Ex, with notebook holes along top. 17) 1919 Colored Tri-State League schedule (3.25 x 6.5 inches). 18) 1949 Historia Del Base Ball Profesional De Cuba by Raul Diez Muro. Fr-Gd. 19) Eighteen Cuban baseball Guides, Guia de Beisbol, spanning the years 1925-2006: 1925, 1930, 1932, 1967, 1969, 1970-1973, 1979, and 1999-2006. Ex overall. 20) 1903 dual indoor baseball and basketball scorecard (front and back) for a baseball game and basketball game between the 30th Separate Co. and Kanaweola on January 28th. (6 x 9.5 inches). Gd. 21) 1915 Long Branch New Jersey souvenir scorecard. The twelve-page booklet features an interior scorecard for the Long Branch Cubans (unscored). The booklet also features the Cubans' 1915 home schedule. 7 x 9 inches. Ex. The remaining items included ten Cuban baseball record and/or fact books spanning the years 1921-1956 (Gd-Vg overall), four Esso Guia de Beisbol books (Fr-Gd), 1949 Jackie Robinson Baseball Hero comic book (Pr), 1948 soft-cover biography of Satchel Paige titled Pitchin' Man (Pr), four modern-era Cuban baseball biographies, and a few miscellaneous Mexican and Cuban league baseball publications, documents, and ticket stubs.
