Cuban and Negro-League Vintage Photo Collection (80)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $5,332.50
Large collection of eighty Cuban and Negro League photos, spanning nearly five decades (early 1900s through the 1950s), featuring numerous images of Alejandro Oms and Pablo "Champion" Mesa. Other stars included here, either alone or within a team photo, are Oscar Charleston, Ray Dandridge, Adolfo Luque, Minnie Monoso, Armando Marsons, Rafael Almeida, and even Fidel Castro. Various forms of photos are represented here, including real-photo postcards, snapshots, and news photos, with sizes ranging from 1.5 x 2 inches to 8 x 10 inches (the majority are approximately postcard size). It should be noted that this collection was amassed over a period of decades by an extremely advanced and dedicated Cuban-baseball historian and is one of several Cuban/Mexican/Negro League lots that he has consigned to this auction, all of which are notable for the scarcity of the material therein. A number of the photos in this group are related to the research he completed on the Long Branch Cubans (1912-1916) and the 1923 Santa Clara club. While not every player represented here has been identified (especially for the team photos), many have period identifications written on the reverse. It should be noted that a number of the photos picture the respective player in formal attire and a few are signed. The following is a brief listing of the players included here, either alone or in a group photo, with the number of photos for each player (if more than one) listed in parentheses: Oscar Charleson (formal attire; taken during his retirement years), Ray Dandridge (as a member of the Minneapolis Millers; posing on field in uniform with Amado Ibanez, circa 1953), Alejandro Ohms (11; eight in uniform), "Champion" Mesa (13, seven in uniform), Pedro Formental (8; two signed), Fidel Castro (in a Barbudos uniform), Minnie Minoso, Jose Acosta (signed), Luis Padron (3; including a framed cabinet card picturing him on field holding a bat as a member of Poughkeepsie), Jose Maria Fernandez (3), Mike Gonzalez (2), Ramon Bragona (signed), Julio Rojo (2), Hector Rodriguez (3), Adolfo Luque, Pablo Garcia (3), Pancho Herrera, Silvio Garcia, and Angel Scull (he was in the 1954 Topps baseball set but never appeared in the Majors). Additional highlights include a 1914 team photo of the Long Branch Cubans, a real-photo postcard of the 1908 New Britain BBC featuring Rafael Almeda, Armando Marsans, and Luis Padron, a Cuban Stars team photo, circa 1930, with Oms and Mesa, an all African American Army club (L Company 25th Infantry), a photo of Almendares Park in 1901, and a team-signed photo of an all-woman Cuban baseball team ("Cubanas"). Condition ranges from Poor/Fair to Near Mint, averaging Good/Very Good, with most displaying light-to-moderate creases and/or border tears/chips. Total: 80 photos. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
