1916 Original George Grantham Bain Boston Red Sox Team News Photo - PSA/DNA Type 1

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,777.50

Original news photo, taken by renowned baseball photographer George Grantham Bain, capturing the World Champion 1916 Boston Red Sox in a classic team pose. Twenty-eight uniformed team members are pictured here, including Babe Ruth, Herb Pennock, manager Bill Carrigan, Duffy Lewis, Carl Mays, Everett Scott, Ernie Shore, Jack Barry, and Dick Hoblitzel. As was customary for Bain, the name of the team and an inventory number were etched into the negative. As a result, both are visible along the top border: "Red Sox 1916 4016-8." A Bain News Service stamp on the reverse has been covered by two pieces of white tape, but is still visible upon close examination. A subsequent Culver Pictures, Inc., stamp also appears on the reverse, as does the stamped caption: "Boston Red Sox/Playing for World's Championship/Oct. 7, 1916." Accompanied by an LOA from PSA/DNA certifying it as a "Type 1 Original George Grantham Bain Photograph." 1916 marked Babe Ruth’s second full season in the Major Leagues. He made his first career World Series start that fall and it was certainly a memorable one. Ruth set a record for most innings pitched in a single World Series game when he went the distance in a 2-1 fourteen-inning victory over the Brooklyn Robins in Game 2. This is an extremely early Ruth photo and one that captures him just prior to his first World Series appearance. The photo (7 x 5 inches) displays a number of moderate edge tears resulting in paper loss; however, none of the player images is affected. A few minor surface wrinkles are also evident. Technically in Good condition, but the central image area is free of any significant defects and presents as Excellent. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,777.50
