Rare Early 1900s Cuban Spalding Guide and Cuban-Baseball Book Collection (7)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $948.00
This collection is comprised of four early Cuban Spalding guides and three Cuban-baseball history books, all but one of which date to the early 1900s. It should be noted that each of the six early works offered here is exceedingly rare, both here and in Cuba, and we cannot recall the last time we have seen another example at auction. Spalding Guides (4): With regard to the exterior design, these soft-cover guides are almost indistinguishable from the American version. However, what makes these guides so rare is that, while they do feature a few of the same photos and articles as the American versions, they are not simply Spanish-language equivalents. Nearly all of the content is specific to Latin American baseball, Cuba in particular. As such, they offer information and photos that are most likely found nowhere else, which makes them invaluable reference works for historians and collectors alike. 1) 1908 Spalding's Base Ball Guide. Stamped "Spanish-American Edition" in red lettering along the top of the front cover. Also stamped "Sample Copy" in blue lettering in the middle of the front cover. 245 pages, with numerous advertising pages at the rear. Included among the many interior photos is one of the Cuban Stars featuring Jose Mendez. Professionally bound in black cloth boards. Gd-VG. 2) 1914 Spalding's Base Ball Guide. Front and rear covers missing, but obviously the Spanish-American Edition. 197 pages, with no advertising pages at the rear, probably incomplete. A few interior pages are also missing but they have been replaced with photocopies of the original pages. Professionally bound in black cloth boards (the spine is incorrectly labeled "1913"). Fr. 3) 1911 Spalding's Base Ball Guide. Stamped "Spanish-American Edition" in red lettering along the top of the front cover. 196 pages, with numerous advertising pages at the rear. Interior photos include a composite team image of Habana with "Pop" Lloyd and Pete Hill, and full-page photos, respectively, of Armando Marsans and Rafael Almeida. Gd, with heavy tape repair to the covers and spine. 4) 1916-1917 Spalding's Base Ball Guide. Stamped "Edicion Hispano-Americana" and "Por 1916-17" on brown lettering on the cover. 185 pages, with numerous advertising pages at the rear. Interior photos include images of Jose Mendez, Adolfo Luque, and Armando Marsans. Bound in marble cloth boards. Gd. Cuban Baseball Histories (3): 1) 1907 El Base-Ball En La Habana, Matanzas Y Cardenas 1878-1907 by Raoul Diez Y Muro. Published by La Prueba, Habana. Mendoza, Jose Maria Herrero, and Manuel F. Calcines. Published by Comas Y Lopez, Habana.
