1907 Baseball In Cincinnati by Harry Ellard - Limited First Edition
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $829.50
Baseball In Cincinnati by Harry Ellard. Limited first edition, published by Johnson & Hardin, Cincinnati, 1907. As noted on the title page, the offered volume is a rare "Subscription Edition," and is hand numbered "247" out of 500. This is one of the key early baseball historical books, and a key addition for any world class baseball library. This important 277-page volume is packed with information regarding the rich history of baseball, especially as it relates to Cincinnati, and is heavily illustrated with photographs, many found nowhere else. The publication of this volume was obviously a labor of love for Ellard, as no expense was spared, from the use of slick stock for the photographic plates, many of them full-page, to the elaborately designed white-and-red cloth boards. It is of the highest quality production, and the definitive volume of its type regarding baseball in Cincinnati during the nineteenth century. The dozens and dozens of high-quality photographs add to the already high esteem with which it is held in the eyes of serious collectors and scholars. The book displays light toning to the spine, a circular water stain on the front cover (from a glass having been set down on it), and a number of light stains on the back cover. The names of two former owners (one dated 1909 and the other 1938) are written on opposite sides of the front flyleaf. A few stray pencil notations appear on a few pages; otherwise all are clean and bright. The covers and all of the pages remain firmly bound. In Very Good condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800.
