Three 1872-1874 Baseball Guide Rarities (3)

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $2,133.00

The game of baseball was a true "work in progress" during the nineteenth century. For many players the only way to keep track of the yearly rule changes was to consult the annual reference guides, which, as the seasons went on, were issued by a number of respected publishers. Offered here are three rare early guides, each of which has been edited by Henry Chadwick, the "Father of Baseball." Interestingly, all of these guides originate from the same source, as the original owner's name, J. N. Stone Jr. (or his initials), as well as a date, appear on each cover. 1) De Witt's The Base Ball Guide for 1872, published by Robert M. De Witt, New York (4 x 6.25 inches). Soft cover, 126 pages. The cover features a generic illustration of a pitcher from the era as well as the name "J. N. Stone Jr." and the date "May 8, 1872" neatly scripted in black ink. Both covers are intact and remain firmly affixed to the spine. A few minor edge chips are evident to both covers and light foxing affects most of the pages. A number of stray pencil notations can be found on the pages as well. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. 2) Beadle's Dime Base-Ball Player for 1873, published by Beadle and Adams, New York (4 x 6.25 inches). Soft cover, 100 pages. An illustration of a batter and fielder decorate the cover. The intertwined initials "JNS" and the date, "4.2.73.," are written on the cover in black ink. The name "J. N. Stone Jr." and the date, "4/2/73" are scripted in black ink on the title page. Both covers are intact and remain firmly affixed to the spine. A few minor edge chips are evident on both covers and the pages are lightly toned. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. 3) De Witt's The Base Ball Guide for 1874, published by Robert M. De Witt, New York (4 x 6.25 inches). Soft cover, 100 pages. The cover features a generic illustration of a pitcher from the era. The name "J. N. Stone Jr." and the date "3/26/74" are neatly scripted in black ink on the cover. Both covers are intact and remain firmly affixed to the spine. A few minor edge chips are evident to both covers and light foxing is visible on most pages. A small tear affects the front cover and the first few interior pages. A number of stray ink notations can be found on the pages as well. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. These extremely rare books display beautifully and are in far superior condition to most examples seen in the hobby today (most of which are often missing covers and are affected by numerous serious flaws). This is an outstanding collection of three early baseball guides dating from the dawn of professional baseball. Total: 3 guides. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,133.00
