1887 Our National Game Scrapbook (All 5 Color Plates Intact)

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $711.00

During the latter half of the nineteenth century the compilation of scrapbooks was extremely popular and few homes in America could be found without a family scrapbook prominently displayed in the parlor. Offered here is a rare unused scrapbook produced specifically for housing keepsakes related to our national pastime. Aptly titled Our National Game, the hard-bound book features a gilt-embellished scene of a game in progress on the cover and gilt accents on the spine. The title page displays a colorful illustration of a period ball club and bears an 1887 copyright by Liebenroth, Von Auw & Co. There are twenty-one unused sheets in the book, five of which display a full-color illustration, captioned respectively: "Wild Pitch," "Fly Ball," "Caught Between the Bases," "Foul Ball," and "Home Run." The album (11 x 14 inches) displays only minor wear along the exterior, including some slight abrasions on the back cover. All of the pages are lightly toned, and two of the sheets have detached from the spine. In Excellent condition overall. This is a rare and decorative nineteenth-century baseball piece. In the general antique collectibles world, we have seen in years past the color illustration plates removed from these albums and sold separately as they are ideal for framing and display. It is rare to find a complete, intact album such as this in high grade. Reserve $200. Estimate $300+.
