1888 Scientific Ball by Fred Pfeffer

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $6,517.50

Scientific Ball, by Fred Pfeffer. First edition, published by Fred Pfeffer, Chicago, 1888. This extremely rare eighty-two page soft cover book was written by Chicago White Stockings second baseman Fred Pfeffer and contains autobiographical information, reminiscences, and instructions on how to play the game. Despite being such a well known and important early baseball book, it is remarkably rare. In fact, this is the only example of this important book that we can recall having ever seen, let alone offered. It should be noted that this particular example once resided in the famed Steve Cummings Collection, which was perhaps the finest and most complete baseball-book collection ever assembled. Nearly all of the highlights of Cummings' collection were sold at public auction in 2000, at which time our consignor purchased the offered book (and where auction records indicate it realized $6,345). It has been in his possession since that time. The book is worn along the spine with the front cover nearly separated and the back cover completely detached, but present. A tear on the cover has been repaired on the interior by means of clear tape. The pages are extremely clean. Technically in Very Good condition, but displaying a strong Excellent overall appearance. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $6,517.50
