1867 Home Run Galop Sheet Music
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $948.00
Issued in 1867, this sheet music, titled Home Run Galop, is best known today not for its musical merits, but for its beautifully illustrated cover picturing a game in progress. As noted by the text on the cover, the Home Run Galop, which is an instrumental number, was dedicated "To The Atlantic Club of Chicago - The Boys Who Make 'Em." Composed by F. W. Root and published by Root & Cady, Illinois. Lithography by J. Gemmell. This sheet music was issued two years prior to the dawn of professional baseball and is one of the earliest examples featuring an illustration of a game in progress on the cover. Today, it is widely considered one of the most attractive of all nineteenth-century baseball sheet musics. There is a very neatly scripted vintage black fountain-pen inscription along the left border (not affecting the central image) and the sheet music was once bound in an album, as evidenced by the five tiny string holes on the spine. Four small pieces of mounting tape remain on the reverse as a result of its having once been framed. Without regard to those extremely minor anomalies (all of which are of no consequence with reference to display and which also can easily be matted out if desired), the four-page sheet music (9.75 x 12.75 inches) remains in spectacular Excellent to Mint condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $948.00
