Circa 1870s Yale Baseball Team Photo
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,303.50
Extraordinary early team baseball photo, circa 1870s, picturing eleven uniformed players posing together on the steps of a building. While we cannot state with certainty, we strongly believe the "Y" on the front of each player's jersey denotes Yale College (Yale College became Yale University in 1887). The most striking feature of the uniform shown here is the hat, which is not the standard baseball-style cap of the era. Interestingly, we found that exact style hat worn by some of the team members pictured in an 1874 Yale baseball team photo (originating from the Yale photo archives). Although the uniform was slightly different in the 1874 photo, the many similarities and the use of the same style hat seems to be too coincidental to ignore. This is a particularly outstanding nineteenth-century baseball photo dating from the earliest days of our national pastime. The photo (8.75 x 6.75 inches) displays remarkable clarity and remains in Near Mint condition. It has been affixed onto a slightly larger cardboard mount that displays only modest handling wear and is in Excellent to Mint condition. Encapsulated by SGC and labeled "C. 1874 Photo Baseball Club." Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,303.50
