Circa 1982 Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $1,422.00
St. Louis Cardinals "1982 World Champions" souvenir ball signed by both Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. Mantle's signature, scripted in black ink (grading "6/7"), is located on a side panel, while Maris' signature, rendered in blue ink (grading "9," with light bleeding), appears on the sweet spot. Mantle/Maris signed baseballs have always been highly prized by collectors and remain the most desirable dual-signed ball in the hobby with the exception of a Ruth/Gehrig example. They are also rare. Despite the duo's fame following the historic 1961 season, balls signed by the pair are much scarcer than one would imagine. The primary reason for that is the fact that Maris passed away in 1985, just prior to the "signing-show boom." Unfortunately, the high demand for Mantle/Maris signed balls, coupled with their scarcity, has resulted in countless forgeries over the years. Given the large number of problem "Mantle/Maris" balls circulating in the hobby today, sophisticated collectors have come to truly appreciate how rare and desirable authentic examples, such as this, are in today's marketplace. While we do not know exactly when or where this ball was signed, the fact that it is a Cardinals souvenir ball commemorating the club's 1982 World Championship means that it must have been signed by Maris sometime during the four-year period 1982-1985 (the year of Maris' passing). In Excellent to Mint condition overall. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $1,422.00
