1968 Hall of Fame Game Program Signed by Roberto Clemente and Others - From the Keith Sutton Collection - Founding Member of SABR
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $829.50
On July 22, 1968, the Pittsburgh Pirates and Detroit Tigers traveled to Cooperstown to take part in the annual Hall of Fame Game held at Doubleday Field. Over 9,000 fans attended the game that day, including Keith Sutton, who, just three years later, returned to Cooperstown as one of the founding members of SABR (Society for American Baseball Research). (The organization's first ever meeting was held in Cooperstown on August 15, 1971.) Offered here is Sutton's personal scorecard from the July 22, 1968, Hall of Fame Game, which has been neatly scored in pencil on the interior to record a 10-1 Detroit victory. At the time, Sutton was working as sports editor of the Wayne Independent, a tri-weekly paper based in his hometown of Honesdale, Pennsylvania; however, the fan in him could not resist trying to collect a few autographs. Ultimately, he was successful in obtaining the signatures of Roberto Clemente, Steve Blass, Vernon Law, and Jim Northup, all of whom have flawlessly signed the scorecard in blue ink (each grading "10") on the reverse. While at the game, Sutton also took a few photos (each 6 x 3.5 inches), three of which accompany the scorecard. One pictures fourteen Hall of Fame players and Baseball Commissioner William Eckert posing together on the field prior to the game, while the other two are candid images capturing, respectively, Bobby Veale, Roberto Clemente, and Jose Pagan together, and Don Clendenon alone by the batting cage. Also with the program are three original press sheets issued by the Hall of Fame for the game, two of which list each team's respective roster, and one which lists the results of all of the previous Hall of Fame Games. As was his custom, Sutton has added notations along the top of the cover, as well as copious information about the game on the interior (umpires, time of the game, attendance, etc.). The fold-over scorecard (6 x 9 inches, folded) is in Near Mint condition, as are the photos and press sheets. Total: seven items (scorecard, three photos, and three press sheets). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800.
