1948 The Babe Ruth Story Signed First Edition
Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $4,443.75
Signed copy of one of the most desirable of all baseball books: a first edition of The Babe Ruth Story by Babe Ruth as told to Bob Considine. Published by E. P. Dutton & Co., New York, 1948. This particular copy features a flawless Babe Ruth signature scripted in blue fountain pen (grading "10") on the front flyleaf. The Babe Ruth Story was published just months prior to Ruth's death, a time when his failing health precluded him from honoring all of the many autograph requests he normally received. Thus, signed copies of this book are not only rare but also among the most important and final items ever penned by the legendary "Sultan of Swat." For that reason they are highly prized by collectors today. The 250-page hardcover book (6 x 8.5 inches) displays only light wear. All of the pages are clean and bright. A bookseller's notation is lightly written in pencil at the top of the first page: "1st Ed - Signed/2,000.00." (The price notation predates 1998 as the notation was there when this volume was purchased by our consignor at public auction in 1998 for $5,687.) In Excellent condition overall. Complete with its original dust-jacket (Vg; a few minor tears throughout). This is a particularly strong example of this signed classic featuring a perfectly preserved Ruth signature in the interior. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000+. SOLD FOR $4,443.75
