Eppa Rixey Single-Signed Ball

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $6,517.50

Official Southern Association (Hurth) ball signed by Hall of Fame pitcher Eppa Rixey. Rixey has scripted his name in black fountain pen across the sweet spot, with the signature grading "8/9." The fact that Charlie Hurth was president of the Southern Association during the 1940s and 1950s helps to define the time period in which this ball was signed. Rixey won 266 games over twenty-one seasons (1912-1933) in the Major Leagues, including a league-leading 25 wins in 1922. Unlike most players, Rixey did not remain in baseball following his retirement. Instead, he ran a full-time insurance business. That, plus the fact that he passed away on February 28, 1963, exactly a month and one day after having been elected to the Hall of Fame, has resulted in the extreme rarity of Eppa Rixey single-signed balls today. This is the very first Rixey single we have ever offered and one would be hard pressed to find a finer example. The ball displays only the slightest traces of surface wear and is in Excellent to Mint condition. This is an extremely desirable Hall of Fame single-signed ball and one that is missing from many of even the most advanced collections. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+.
