Circa 1955 Jackie Robinson Signed "Jackie Robinson Clothing Store" Advertising Card - PSA/DNA MINT 9

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,422.00

Extremely rare postcard-size real-photo promotional advertising card featuring Jackie Robinson as a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers, signed by Robinson on the front. Robinson has boldly inscribed the photo "Best Wishes/Jackie Robinson" in blue ink, with the signature having been graded MINT 9 by PSA/DNA. A facsimile inscription, in black print along the bottom white border, reads "Sincerely Yours,/Jackie Robinson." This photo was a promotional piece issued by the Jackie Robinson Clothing Store, a men's apparel store located in Harlem that Robinson owned. While the store is not mentioned by name, the printing on the reverse reads "Uptown New York's Most Complete Men's Store," and includes the business address: "111 West 125th Street/New York 27, N.Y." Robinson opened his men's store (at the location listed, which was in the heart of Harlem's shopping district) in December 1952 and although it bore his name, he was not involved in the day-to-day operations. However, he did spend a lot of time there during the off-season, where he enjoyed greeting the patrons. The store remained in business for six years before closing in 1958. In addition to being a very rare signed souvenir from Robinson's short-lived business venture (in fact, we have never seen another example, signed or unsigned), this piece has a special provenance: it was obtained by our consignor as a youngster. At the time, both Robinson and our consignor's family lived in Connecticut. Delighted to learn that Robinson was practically a neighbor, our consignor wrote to him and a short time later received the offered piece in the mail. It has remained in his possession since that day. The photo (3.5 x 5.5 inches) has a small piece of tape affixed to the reverse and is otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,422.00
