1953-1955 Mickey Mantle Signed Large Dormand Postcard - Vintage Signature!
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $474.00
Large Dormand postcard of Mickey Mantle, inscribed by Mantle in vintage blue ink to our consignor: "To Betty/Best Wishes/Mickey Mantle." The inscription and signature, which grade "5/6," appear in the upper left corner and contrast well against the light background. This postcard has been in our consignor's possession since the early 1950s and was obtained for her by her father, who was the commanding General of Fort Dix (New Jersey) from 1953 to 1955. In her accompanying letter of provenance, she recounts how her father attended a Yankees game one day during the early 1950s and returned that evening with this signed postcard. Obviously, the general was able to pull some strings with the Yankees brass in obtaining an authentic Mantle signature, as opposed to a "clubhouse" example. It should be noted the the large Dormand postcard of Mantle is a very rare and desirable collectible in its own right. Signed examples, especially those featuring a vintage Mantle signature, are far rarer. In fact, this is the first example we have ever offered and we cannot recall having seen another. Interestingly, when our consignor first contacted us regarding this piece, she even sent us a picture of her bedroom in the 1950s, where one can clearly see this very postcard hanging on her wall (the photo can be viewed on our website). The large-format postcard (9 x 12) reflects the normal wear one would expect to find on a former wall ornament, including a tack hole at the top, tape residue and/or surface abrasions in the corner areas (front and reverse), and minor creases (mainly in the corner and border areas). The reverse remains as issued, with no written notations. In Good to Very Good condition overall. Despite the flaws, the central image area and autograph are largely unaffected and, if matted and framed, the postcard would present as Excellent. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $474.00
