1946-1959 Sam Rice Single-Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $6,517.50
Official American League (Harridge) ball signed by Hall of Fame outfielder Sam Rice. Rice has scripted his name in black ink on a side panel, with the signature grading "8/9." Rice was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1963 (twenty-nine years after his retirement) and he passed away in 1974 at the age of eighty-four. Therefore, Hall of Fame collectors were left with a relatively short eleven-year "window" to obtain his signature, and, while some collectors did actively collect single-signed baseballs in earlier years, for the most part it was after Rice's passing that single-signed balls were universally recognized as the ideal by most collectors. This particular ball dates from the 1946-1959 manufacturing period, which means it was very likely (or at least very possibly) signed by Rice prior to his induction into the Hall of Fame. Sam Rice single-signed balls are rare and this is just the second we have ever offered. It is also distinguished by its remarkable state of preservation. The ball displays only the lightest hint of age toning and is in Near Mint condition. This is a superb Sam Rice single in all respects and one that would be a significant addition to an advanced Hall of Fame single-signed ball collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
